Butterfly and breaststroke really dont go together well in the NCAA format, but its nice to see that kind of versatility. And a 3:47.2 in the 400 IM gives him a really nice set of three NCAA events that fit well together. Maybe his best college-level comp is someone like Sean Grieshop, a great 400 IM/500 free combo swimmer who could swim up to the mile or across to a stroke 200 if needed. 2017 Top Football Recruits (4257) 2017 Top Football Recruits. Liam Custer (Previous Rank: Unranked) Sarasota Sharks Riverview High School Osprey, FL **Verbally committed to Stanford** Best Times: Jones is a bit more of a mid-distance specialist for the moment: his 200 and 500 frees are comparable to some of the guys who made the top 20, and the 200 fly makes a very solid third event. Best Times: 50 free 19.95, 100 free 43.67, 100 back 47.40, 200 back 1:46.77. Best Times: 200 fly 1:44.00, 100 fly 47.61, 200 free 1:39.41. Best Times: Marshall is an excellent 200 backstroker with solid 100 back speed to go along with it. He really back-halfs the race with great closing speed. Hes got especially good leg strength and is pretty kick-driven across all four strokes that includes solid underwater kicking which should play in even more to short course. Theres not a great third even yet, but hes dropping fast in the 200 back, going from 1:50 as a sophomore to 1:46.5 as a junior, and he also cut three tenths down to 45.8 in the 100 free. 2023 Basketball Recruit. Heres kind of a cool, birds-eye angle of his lifetime-best 100 fly (lane 4, white cap). But there arent a lot of true two-distance IMers in our ranked recruits. Powe actually appears in this same NCSA video we linked for Zuchowski above (Powe is lane 3, black cap, two lanes down from Zuchowski). Heres his career-best in the 100 short course yard breaststroke (lane 5, fifth from the top, in a dark cap). They have a late season short course yards opportunity to post great times. Heres a 200 free (lane 4, fifth lane from the top) where Sergile really shows off some nice flip turns and carries his speed really well through breakouts. Later in that same video, we get a great look at his distinctive straight-arm freestyle (lane 5, black cap). While each individual stroke isnt terribly strong in this class, the IM group is. Best Times: As a pure two-distance backstroker, Peck is second in this class to only Diehl. Hes the best 400 IMer and 500 freestyler in the class but his most impressive event might not be either of those two. 3. Back then, Cal and Texas (sometimes Stanford) had a stranglehold on the top 5 recruits, and the comments section when Chaney signed with Florida was largely about how he must have gone there only because Cal and Texas were out of full rides. Ben Irwin SwimAtlanta Buford High School Buford, GA**Verbally committed to Navy** Hes definitely better at the 100s of fly, breast and free at the moment, but that 200 IM time suggests hes got the endurance to excel in the 200s of any stroke. Plus can't go wrong with swimming outside everyday. A lot of them would hinge on how much you value his great 100 fly (46.6) vs a top 200 flyer like #18 David Schmitt. The Arizona State 200 medley relay tied Cals Pac-12 record on Wednesday to open the 2023 Pac-12 Swimming & Diving Championships. The mile would make a nice third event, and DAriano isnt far out of the best time in the class in that race. Obviously, Buff doesnt have Hoffers unprecedented sprint free speed (19.0/41.2 as a high school junior). Best Times: Kelly is a tick behind Battaglini in nearly all of their shared events, but his calling card is a wider range of event options. Theres also a chance that weve simply missed a no-brainer (weve taken every precaution to avoid that), and if that happens, we want to make sure we correct it. Best Times: Heres another fast-dropping sprinter with a lot of relay potential. He leads everyone in the 200 breast by quite a ways, which shows a lot of toughness and experience. NCSA analyzed over 500 four-year colleges with men's college swimming programs across four division levels (D1, D2, D3 and NAIA) to develop a list of the Best Men's Swimming Colleges for Student-Athletes. Maurer also has the best mile in the class, and didnt even get to swim that event in Californias high school season, where he put up a big 500 free drop. Last years group, though, morphed quite a bit as juniors and is now considered more of a fly/back class where a lot of the top-end swimmers can also sprint freestyle. I cant get Mullen into the top 20 based on short course production. I am beyond excited to announce that I will be continuing my academic and athletic career at St.Thomas University. This isnt an exhaustive list of others we considered, but the top few left off the list who made the decisions on 18-20verydifficult. Branon doesnt have nearly the versatility of Sergile, but is pretty decent in the relay-distance freestyles (20.9/45.3/1:39.4) and is rising fast in butterfly. He reclassified into the class of 2022, but really isnt significantly older than this group his lifetime-bests in the 100 free and 200 IM both came this spring at age 17, the same age as class leaders Dawson Joyce (17 when he went 43.5 in the 100 free last fall) and Baylor Nelson (17 when he went 1:44.4 in the IM this spring). Speedo Rankings; Records; Swimmer Bios; Meet Listing; Swim Jobs; . Custer matches up very favorably compared to Jake Magahey (14:51 as a junior) and Ross Dant (14:50 as a junior). Compared to previous junior classes weve ranked, Custer is almost identical to now-American record-holder Bobby Finke, who was 14:37.7 as a junior. But thats one of those big-league traits that lead us to believe Hayon could grow into an elite 200 flyer with time. Mullens best short course yards 400 IM is from 2019, so it feels like theres a chance a big drop is coming. Hayon is another guy who smashed his way from well outside our top 20 into the top 10. Sisson French can't wait to finally get all of the first-years . 20.0 and 43.4 mean serious speed those would have been the best sprint free times in the class of 2023, 2022, or 2020 as sophomores. That has to bode well for his trajectory over the next year or so before he enters the college ranks. 19. The depth is definitely still the case, though the flyers and backstrokers have mostly overtaken the sprint freestylers as the most notable group in this class. His five 200s definitely stand out from the rest of his event portfolio, most notably the 200 IM and 200 free. Best Times: Now the list swings back a little bit towards versatility with Maldari, a great backstroker/IMer out of North Carolina. Hes got great turns and a natural underwater kick. Zou could also use a good third event: hes 1:50.4 in the IM right now, which is probably his best shot to develop more individual scoring potential. 17. With that out of the way, lets get to our rankings. Were going with Kharun at #3 for a few reasons. But when Sandidge decides to make his move (about 900 yards in and about 8:30 in this video), the second gear is clearly visible and very impressive. What Croley doesnt have yet is that standout third event. Projecting international recruits often becomes more a discussion ofwhentheyll first join a college program and notwhichprogram theyll join. 4 and Michigan makes an appearance in the top 10 at No. 1. 13. Marsteiner has the classic distance question when it comes to his third event: do you stick with freestyle and try to drum up the speed to race a 200 free, or roll with endurance and toughness and mix in that 400 IM? It's a good sophomore class for freestylers and IMers. His backstroke times are reminiscent of someone like Destin Lasco, who was 45.9/1:41.7 as a high school junior before really breaking out at the college level. His mile is way ahead of his other events, though, and that limits the scoring upside a little. (Previous Rank: N/A) Official psych sheets, eligible relays and a list of alternates have been confirmed by the NCAA two weeks out from the womens championship meet in Knoxville. Getting under 4:20 in the 500 free is a great step as a high school junior, and Taylor dropped three seconds there since last year. A lot of the top-end talent can cross over into one or the other IM race. Nicholas going 47.4 in the 100 fly is no joke thats among the best times in the entire class in this event. As a result, it felt like the perfect time to update our top 25 recruiting classes -- with rankings just about set in stone at this point in the cycle. This class has the markings of a Jack Bauerle team versatility and mid-D specialists who are capable of swimming down to the 50/100 for relay purposes. Every B1G cuts br from the scoring team. Chase Swearingen New Albany Aquatic Club Westerville Central High School Westerville, OH **Verbally committed to Kentucky** Best Times: Maybe the most proven combo in NCAA swimming is sprint freestyle with a top-end 100 fly mixed in. Still, the 50 free and 100 free by themselves can provide up to six total events at the NCAA level, so Joyce should carry plenty of recruiting value. The higher end D2 programs stress Futures Championship times. Best Times: We go from a bunch of specialists to a true all-arounder late in our ranks. Malicki had a great junior year, dropping 1.5 seconds in the 100 breast to push Fan for the top time in the class. 20. In many cases, college coaches will only begin recruiting a student-athlete once she has proved she can swim at the competitive times for the school's conference.
